JLBJH Studio Album Update
3rd September, 2024
A big thanks to John for giving us a progress report on the forthcoming, brand new studio album from John Lees' Barclay James Harvest. Recording, at John's Friarmere studio, has taken a little longer than anticipated, partly due to other commitments such as rehearsals for the Huddersfield orchestral concerts, but also because the plan is now for an ambitious double album with a proggy, loose conceptual theme of 'time'.
These are the working titles of the songs already recorded:
- Peace Like a River
- Heard It All Before
- Love
- Snake Oil
- Blood of Abraham
- Magpie
- Dust
- Dust Overture
- From Stars That Shine
- End of Days
We should emphasise that these are only working titles, and may well change before release, which is expected to be in 2025, when recording, overdubbing, mixing and artwork are complete. It's safe to say, though, that the album will feature real Mellotron, as Jez has been using Woolly's original M400, as seen and heard on the Philharmonic! live set. The album title has not been confirmed yet - we'll keep you informed as work progresses.

A Message From John
11th December, 2022
After three years of postponement and re-scheduling, we are really looking forward to the 2023 concert dates in March, April, May and June which we are pleased will be going ahead, with some slight adjustments to the original itinerary, which were outside the band's control.
As many of you know, in January I will celebrate my 76th birthday and I have come to the decision that our 2023 concerts will be my last year of full touring.
I do intend to continue to write and record with Craig, Kev and Jez , and JLBJH will still perform occasional one-off live dates in the future such as festivals or other special events, so it will not be a complete cessation of musical activity, but I do not intend to undertake further extensive tours beyond the dates in 2023.
I have been privileged to have enjoyed so many years making music, which could not have been done to the degree of success achieved without the help and support of Olwen and my family, my bandmates and musical collaborators, my managers, agents and promoters, the production crews we rely upon and, of course, the many fans around the world whose loyalty and continued engagement in the music is deeply valued. Thank you, one and all.
So I fully intend to go out on a high! We have a new album nearing completion and planned for release in 2023, and we have a busy year of live dates ahead of us.
During the 50th Anniversary Concert, Craig described our fans as "family" . It was an astute observation, and there is certainly an enduring sense of a community amongst Barclay James Harvest followers, which we hope will long continue to thrive. The band and I look forward to seeing as many of the BJH "family" as possible at the 2023 concerts, as we celebrate my "farewell to touring".
In the meantime, the band and I send you all our best wishes for the Festive season and for health, happiness and peace.
John Lees

Unfortunately, because of routing and scheduling considerations, and the fact that so many acts are trying to reschedule concerts for next year, the planned concerts at both the Frome Cheese and Grain and Cardiff Tramshed have had to be cancelled, as has JLBJH's appearance at the HRH Prog festival.
Refunds for the Frome and Cardiff shows can be obtained from the point of purchase - we will refund all tickets bought through the Barclay James Harvest web site in the next few days, so if you bought from us, you don't need to take any further action. HRH Prog Postponed
17th March, 2020
Not unexpectedly, it has now been confirmed that the HRH Prog IX festival in London and Sheffield on 28th and 29th March has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The plan is to reschedule it for later in the year, and as soon as we have any further information regarding new dates, we'll be in touch. Obviously all touring plans are now subject to change, but we'll do our best to keep everyone informed.
In the meantime, the message from John Lees' Barclay James Harvest and ourselves is stay safe, everyone, and we'll see you as soon as we can!
The official statement:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : HRH Prog IX Postponed
Chic Festivals have today released the following statement:
“It is with a heavy heart we are taking the decision to postpone both HRH Prog 9 festivals this March, due to a "Force Majeure" scenario.
With the recent outbreak of Coronavirus across Europe, we have been monitoring the situation daily. The situation is now classed as a Pandemic and we do feel it will get worse before it gets better. In line with recent government recommendations to avoid social gatherings, as well as the knowledge where we have customers flying in from all over Europe, some from countries which are in complete lockdown, we feel that all customers, bands and staff safety and wellbeing are our primary concern.
Both HRH Prog 9 festivals - at Shepherd's Bush Empire London & 02 Academy Sheffield - are both 2 day indoor contained events, both with a large percentage of the audience being more mature, which seem to be the most vulnerable to the virus. Taking all factors into account, we feel morally motivated to postpone the event to a future date which we are now working on with various parties.
Although this is a disappointment, we feel everyone must work together to minimize the risk of this awful virus. A 2 day contained environment with a mature audience & people traveling in from infected areas is just too much of a risk to ignore.”
In addition, an announcement will be made at the start of April, once all new dates are secured and bands locked in.

Charity Auction of Original John Lees Painting
5th November, 2018
We're pleased to announce a unique opportunity to obtain an original piece of art by John Lees, painted exclusively for the charity project Doves For Peace, established in response to the plight of innocent child victims of conflict around the world.
The project asked high profile personalities to make a spontaneous drawing of a dove, which would then be auctioned, with all proceeds going to UNICEF, who are supporting this project.
Amongst those who have previously contributed drawings are David Bowie, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Sir Andy Murray, Sir Bob Geldof, Robert Plant, Bryan Ferry and many more. You can learn more about the project, and see examples of the other drawings, at
http://www.dovesforpeace.co.uk
John’s painting is A5, painted on heavy duty water colour paper, and will be supplied mounted on A4 mounting card and backed. Postage, packing and guaranteed delivery will be included in the winning bid. The auction will close at 18:00 UK time on Monday, December 10th.
Please help us to support this great cause by bidding now at the link below, and you could become the owner of an original piece of art by John Lees!
http://www.bjharvest.co.uk/auction/doves-for-peace/
[Please note that the auction does not function in the same way as eBay, as it does not support “proxy bids” where you specify a maximum bid and the system bids up for you as required. With this auction, the bidding will go straight to the amount you bid. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at ibjhfc@bjharvest.co.uk.]

All of the albums are presented in miniature card sleeves with the original artwork, and the bonus disc contains 20 pieces, ranging from two finished recordings which appeared only on the Uneasy Listening compilation, to previously unheard songs and instrumentals in various states of completion, many of which might well have appeared on a new Maestoso release or a John Lees' Barclay James Harvest album, had Woolly not been tragically taken from us. The set comes with a 20-page full-colour booklet including a comprehensive history, and is housed in a sturdy clamshell box.
All copies pre-ordered from us will also come with an archive photo or postcard.

New JLBJH Single out Now!
8th April, 2013
On the day of release, the single made it to Number 79 in Amazon's overall download rankings, Number 3 in their Rock chart, and Number 1 in Classic Rock!
On behalf of the band we would like to thank all the fans so much for supporting the band's single, "Unreservedly Yours". On waving them off to Germany today the band were absolutely delighted at the response and want to thank you all so much. It means a lot to them.Vicky Powell
Esoteric

"Unreservedly Yours" will be featured on the band's new album North, to be released both physically and digitally in September 2013 on the Esoteric Antenna label. Featuring John Lees (vocals, guitars), Craig Fletcher (vocals, bass), Jez Smith (keyboards, vocals) and Kevin Whitehead (drums, percussion), the song and forthcoming album are very much group efforts, in the tradition of classic BJH, with every track being written specifically for the album by all four members of the band.
The single is download-only, and you can get it from the links below.
Martin Lawrence

Shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Martin Lawrence, sound engineer and co-producer of XII, Eyes Of The Universe, Turn Of The Tide, Caught In The Light and Nexus.
Sincere condolences to all of his friends and family.

Special guests for the whole tour with the exception of Edinburgh (TBA) will be Gordon Giltrap and Oliver Wakeman, who will have a new album called Ravens and Lullabies out in March:
Guitar Legend and the next generation of keyboard wizardry join forces as Gordon Giltrap and keyboardist Oliver Wakeman (fresh from 4 years of touring with the classic progressive rock band Yes) perform together in support of their Ravens and Lullabies album released on Esoteric Antenna in March 2013.
One of the most innovative acoustic guitarists in the UK today, Gordon Giltrap has developed his own unique style, much copied, but never bettered. It is impossible not to be awestruck as he coaxes incredible melodies from his instruments; you almost suspect a second pair of hands. He is well known for his varied musical output and Heartsong (a hit single from the album Perilous Journey in 1977) is instantly recognisable as the theme for the BBC TV's long running Holiday programme.
Following ten solo albums in a variety of styles, Oliver Wakeman joined the legendary band 'YES' in 2008, touring with them up until 2011. A live CD and triple vinyl release, In The Present - Live from Lyon, was a fitting bookend to his period in the band. He has also worked with the folk rock band The Strawbs. He appeared on their last studio album as well as their 40th Anniversary CD release. Appearing in venues across North and South America, Europe and the UK with YES, Strawbs and as a solo artist, he has become a well respected live performing musician to add to his other talents as composer, songwriter, lyricist, arranger and producer.
Be prepared for beautiful compositions, wit and charm from these two virtuosos.

Crystal Palace Garden Party cancelled
29th May, 2012
Unfortunately the Crystal Palace Garden Party scheduled for June 23rd has had to be cancelled because of structural/safety issues with the stage. Here's a message from the organisers:
It is with great disappointment that I must notify you guys that the Crystal Palace Garden Party will not now be able to go ahead.
When it was realised that a 1.5 ton scissor lift truck must come on to the stage to erect the sails and rigging some cursory tests were made to the structure.
There was some obvious weather wear to the stage and the temporary boards that were put down some time ago ... On closer examination it seemed there might be a problem
a structural engineer was called and rotten joists checked etc it was discovered the delapidation was much worse than was at first thought
Any sign off on safety or otherwise of the structure cannot be made possibly for several weeks or more...
Under other circumstances postponement to a new date would be an obvious option but due to the Olympics, no Police support can be used until after the Paralympics and after then, the park already has other events in the diary up to the end of September after which it is unfeasible to have an outdoor concert...
To me this represented an opportunity that I have been working towards for several years and have been working solidly over 5 months 7 days per week!
I can hardly put into words the frustration I feel...
Yours sincerely and with a heavy heart
Mike Fox
Crystal Palace Garden Party Ltd
JLBJH are very disappointed at this turn of events, but obviously it's out of their hands.

Charity Auction
27th November, 2011

Now up for auction on eBay, a unique waistcoat with hand-stitched butterfly inspired by the classic Barclay James Harvest album artwork from Once Again, Baby James Harvest and Early Morning Onwards. The waistcoat has been signed and dated with an indelible fabric pen by John Lees and the other members of John Lees' Barclay James Harvest - Kev Whitehead, Jez Smith and Craig Fletcher - at the band's concert in Holmfirth last weekend. The grey waistcoat is size 10 - 12, has gold and black coloured metal buttons and is fully lined with a beautiful material decorated with sparkly silver butterflies, stars and flowers (hand wash only, because of the glitter on the lining).
As those of you who were at the recent Holmfirth or Leamington concerts will know, John is currently sporting a moustache in support of the Movember charity appeal, the aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. All proceeds from this auction will be donated to John's Movember fund - get a perfect one-off Christmas gift and give to charity at the same time!

Woolly Wolstenholme
14th December, 2010It is with great sadness that John Lees' Barclay James Harvest announces the passing of Woolly Wolstenholme. In recent weeks Woolly's mental health had taken a turn for the worse and sadly he took his own life on Monday 13th December 2010. As you can imagine, John, Craig, Jez and Kevin and everyone associated with the band are stunned that a shining light of Barclay James Harvest is no longer with us. In this difficult time our thoughts are with Woolly's partner, Sue. We would ask all of Woolly's fans to remember his incredible contribution to popular music and his unique presence on stage.
Important Announcement About The Upcoming UK Concerts:
16th November, 2010It is with regret that John Lees' Barclay James Harvest announces that Woolly Wolstenholme will not be able to participate in the forthcoming UK concerts at the end of this month. Following doctor's advice, Woolly has been ordered to rest after suffering from nervous exhaustion. Woolly and the band are deeply disappointed that he won't be able to perform in the forthcoming shows, but everyone involved, including Woolly, feel that the concerts should still take place.
The group are looking forward to performing in Britain again and have a few surprises in store in terms of the set list, including the performance of a new song. Everyone wishes Woolly a speedy recovery and we're looking forward to having him back with the band as soon as he is well enough. John, Craig, Jez and Kevin are looking forward to seeing you all on tour at the end of this month.
